The last couple of days I have spoken of craziness, and indeed craziness exists out there in our political and cultural world. I see the truth as stranger than a John Grisham novel these days (see, for example, DNC suing over an election).
However, there is an optimism out there. It exists not in the reported politics of the day, but in the masses, who simply want to live. These people respect others and just want to live their lives. They do not want to be beaten down by how evil their neighbors are. These people see the good in others and want a diverse and respectful community.
Bear in mind, I do not use the term diverse to mean diversity on color, though that could be a part of it. Diversity means different views and roles, it is not an artificial marker based on a superficial personal trait. Because most people just want to live without undue influence from others, they respect that other people want the same.
This attitude of mutual respect is optimistic because it infers everyone has a right to live and grow. I mentioned in a previous post the transgender bathroom issue: it is far more optimistic to simply respect others and not get in their ‘business’ than it is to should the other side down. The first wants all involved and is inclusive, the latter seeks an exclusive world view.
This first attitude is far better to bring people together and move forward in our lives. We will grow and excel together. The latter will only divide, and we see the results of that division now.
How do we move forward? Is it worth it to continue to yell at each other? I argue, no, it is not.
